HORIZON LINES: A Collaboration with Composer Laura Kaminsky

Friday, July 15th, 8 p.m.
Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall

A multidisciplinary work for oboe, bassoon, and piano, Laura Kaminsky's Horizon Lines incorporates Rebecca Allan's paintings within a digital film by John Feldman. Horizon Lines was commissioned by the Seattle Chamber Music Society in tribute to founding artistic director Toby Saks. It was begun by the artists during a 2010-2011 joint residency at the Hermitage Artists Retreat in Englewood, Florida. The piece, which premiered on July 15th, represents the first artistic collaboration between the composer and painter, who share a deep concern for the natural environment and its enduring power to transform lives. Kaminsky has written three other works that reference the American landscape: Terra Terribilis, a Concerto for Three Percussionists and Orchestra, (nominated for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize), River Music, and The Great Unconformity. In 2008, the artists were guest lecturers at the Reese Institute for Environmental Studies in North Carolina.
